In 2024, Macroom Buffalo Cheese significantly expanded its biodiversity efforts, increasing the total area dedicated to biodiversity from 4 acres in 2023 to 8.7 acres, surpassing its milestone target by more than 100%. This expansion reflects a deepening commitment to environmental stewardship and habitat restoration across the farm.

The company has broadened its approach beyond wildflower planting to include a diverse range of initiatives. The 8.7 acres now encompass 5 acres of newly established native woodland, 0.4 acres of pond habitat, 0.9 acres dedicated to a pheasant pen, and the maintenance of the original 2.4-acre wildflower area. This shift demonstrates a more holistic strategy for supporting local ecosystems and enhancing biodiversity.

Key actions taken in 2024 include the planting of 270 alder and birch trees along the riverbank and 20 additional trees around the pond, contributing to riparian health and wildlife shelter. The company also planted 430 metres of hedgerow, which serve as vital corridors for birds, insects, and small mammals. An owl box was installed to encourage natural pest control and support native bird populations.
